Vestan undir Réttarhól beygir Vatnsdalsá í mörgum hlykkjum til vesturs fyrir Bótarfell, en beygir þá beint i norðvestur og heldur þeirri stefnu út i miðjan Vatnsdal. Vestan undir Bótarfelli dýpkar farvegurinn skyndilega, og litlu sunnar steypist áin i fögrurn fossi niður i stórfenglegt gljúfur, og eftir þvi fellur hún fimm til sex kilómetra niður i Forsæludal. Efsti fossinn heitir Skínandi og litlu neðar eru Kerafoss og Rjúkandi, Neðarlega í gljúfrinu er Skessufoss hjá Glámsþúfu og loks Dalfoss og Stekkjarfoss skammt fyrir ofan Forsæludal
