Árið 1864 var stofnað Búnaðarfélag Húnavatnssýslu, er starfaði til 1870, og lét mjög til sín taka, styrkti ræktun og húsabætur, keypti búnaðaráhöld handa bændum og veitti Torfa Bjarnasyni styrk til búnaðarnáms erlendis, en hann stofnaði síðar fyrsta búnaðarskóla hér á landi.
