Fyrsta gróðurverndarnefnd Austur Húnavatnssýslu var stofnuð vorið 1966 á aðalfundi sýslunefndar. Var þetta gert samkvæmt lögum um landgræðslu ríkisins frá árinu 1965. Þessi fyrsta nefnd var skipuð þremur hreppsnefndaoddvitum, þeim: Jóni Tryggvasyni Ártúnum, Grími Gíslasyni Saurbæ og Guðmundi B. Þorsteinssyni Holti.
Varð Guðmundur fyrsti formaður nefndarinnar.
