Pétur tók við búskapnum ungur, en hann reisti nýbýli síðar í Hólabæ, sem er næsti bær við Gunnsteinsstaði. Búskapur varð ævistarf Péturs. Pétur gegndi mörgum opinberum störfum.

Foreldrar hans voru þau Hafsteinn Pétursson (1886-1961) bóndi og stúdent (1906) og Guðrún Ingibjörg Björnsdóttir (1901-1974), kona hans. Bjuggu þau allan sinn búskap á Gunnsteinsstöðum. Hafsteinn lést árið 1961, 75 ára, og Guðrún árið 1974, 73 ára. Börn þeirra voru Pétur: Fríða Margrét 1933) Blönduósi, Anna Sigurbjörg (1935) Reykjavík, Erla (1939) Gili, Magnús Gunnsteinn (1941-1995) Reykjavík, Stefán (1943) Gunnsteinsstöðum.
Pétur kvæntist árið 1952 heimasætunni í Hvammi, utar í dalnum, Gerði Aðalbjörnsdóttur (1932). Börn eignuðust þau fimm; eru fjögur á lífi, öll uppkomin.
