Hann var fæddur að Haga í Austur-Húnavatnssýslu og átti þar heima alla sína tíð, tók síðar við búi foreldra sinna. Þeirra saga lifði ætíð með honum. Þau höfðu kynnst á Þingeyri og byrjað sinn búskap þar sama árið, 1895, á hluta af jörðinni. Hvort um sig komu þau úr stórum systkinahóp og höfðu bæði orðið fyrir foreldramissi í bernsku.
